Life Of Gabrielle Lefebvre

“It is by sanctifying myself that I will sanctify the souls of my children”—Gabrielle Lefebvre

This is the story of the mother behind the Lefebvre Family, written in 1948 by her spiritual director. It is the tale of war, privation, but most of all, love. It testifies to the love of a mother for family and that mother’s love for God. This holy woman played a pivotal role in raising remarkable children deeply rooted in the Catholic Faith despite facing many of the same obstacles and fears that challenge Catholic mothers today.

With the birth of their first child, Gabrielle Lefebvre became aware of her responsibilities as a Catholic mother. Realizing that she was now charged with forming the soul of the infant that God had given to her, at first it seemed beyond her strength. But through the Lord’s grace and mercy, He showed her the way.

These pages narrate the life of a woman who was determined to raise her children well regardless of the chaos of war, personal illness, and poverty. She turned to God in all things and sought to instill a spirit of generous love, personal responsibility, truthfulness, and gratitude in all her children. The Catholic Faith was always present and central to the Lefebvre family’s life. A clear testimony to this is the fact that, out of Gabrielle Lefebvre’s eight children, five consecrated themselves to God in religious life.

“I prefer the readings which nourish me to those which explain how to give the food of piety to children. Education—above all, Maternal education—is in fact much more of an outpouring of the soul than a syllabus for a teacher.”—Gabrielle Lefebvre
